Today Is Winter Solstice – December 21, 2006
In the middle of the morning, they finally cleaned the recreation yards, and the officers working the pod actually let me and Tony go to the outside recreation cages at the same time, and I finally got my shoes back today. A good start for Yule!
Today is Winter Solstice, which is the shortest day of the year and the start of the 12 nights of Yule, which is also called the Festival of Lights. Yule is the ancient Odinist holiday in celebration of the rise of the sun. After today, the days begin getting longer until the Summer Solstice, then they start to shorten once again. Yule is also the holiest feast of the Teutonic year. Many other religions celebrate the Winter Solstice and this time of year as well.
Of course, in modern Christianity, we have the 12 days of Christmas. This Christian celebration was borrowed from Odinism, as was many other Christian traditions. This seems to have gradually happened from the time that the Roman Emperor Constantine legalized Christianity in 313 AD up until Iceland was officially “converted” in 1000 AD.

I have been sufficiently chastised for lack of updates. I think the main reason I don’t write that much is because I just plain and simply don’t think that I’m that interesting; or to be more precise, I don’t think what I write is that interesting.
Plus, many times I feel that everything is pointless. A long time ago I read about a particular little known Greek philosopher. I think he was a Stoic. Well, he had studied all subjects that there were to study. Of course, all knowledge is fallible but he had achieved so much knowledge that he reached a sort of abyss of wisdom. Did he discover some deep meaning or purpose to Life? Did he find True wisdom and become One with all living things?
No. His final conclusion, his great contribution to Humanity, the sum total of this great thinkers learning, came to this: He decided that he simply was never going to speak again, because, well, everything was pointless.

First of all, let me apologize for the lack of updates lately. A lot of things have been happening recently and I’ve kinda been off in a zone. I know others here have been putting out updates and keeping everyone informed and that’s excellent.What’s been going on? Far too much to explain here, but one of the main things is that I have to file my last appeal in March. That’s only four months away. I understand the psychological/psychosomatic effects of this environment and I know what sensory depravation does to a person, but I’m still affected to a certain extent. Everyone here is, regardless if they want to admit it or not. Some days I’ll have to do nothing but meditate and perhaps read some Nietzsche to avoid going insane, or, engage myself in a little debauchery and read some “popular fiction.”
“To Struggle is to Live,” no doubt, struggling isn’t always easy. But it’s what I DO and it’s what I Love.

Greetings! Allow me to be brief in expressing what I intend on addressing…
On the date of October 23rd, 2006, I am initiating a ‘Hunger Strike.’ This will be done with the intentions of protesting the Death Penalty and the horrid conditions that Death Row prisoners endure daily. Sadly, I cannot predict when this hunger Strike will end, but I intend to push it to the limit of my will. I refuse to eat any more garbage that TDCJ feeds here. I’m tired of accepting spoiled and undercooked food. I’m tired of the deprivation. Change must come! Protesting in many Forms is my way of speaking out and standing up for Justice and Truth. “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that amongst these are LIFE, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness. – That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed. – That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it….”- excerpt from “The Declaration of Independence”

I’ll write a more detailed and lengthy update soon. I just want to post a few things written by two guys involved in the Hunger Strike for now. The following is a poem and short article by Steve Moody (#999076). The new tear-gas grenades they’ve been using made everyone extremely sick. Officers were even taking guys to medical in the middle of the night. People were coughing up blood, vomiting and everything else. I’m still coughing a little but now I can function well enough to write. I’ll be dropping some more updates soon.

August 31, 2006 Thursday
Today Hasan Shakur (AKA Derrick Frazier) is set to be murdered by this state. I don’t really know Hasan, we’ve only spoken a few times. I’ve spent most of my time here on disciplinary status- I started committing physical acts of protest shortly after I arrived on death row.
Hasan has never gone to Level III and he has never committed any physical acts of protest, but he did voice support for what we were doing (and what we continue to do). That’s more than most complacent inmates do so I respect his vocal support. I know Hasan does a lot of organizing in the free-world and I respect that as well. I don’t believe in theory without action but Hasan does more than most and that’s appreciated. Just on that strength, I would conduct a demonstration today for Hasan, but I can’t get in the day-room, I don’t go to rec. today. Someone else has something planned though so it’s all good…

Since we began an actual official mass protest last November the Administration here at the Polunsky Death Camp has instituted several new “security measures.” One of these new policies calls for all inmates to be in their cells when a person is about to be taken out of the building to be executed.
